The mill and shaper were not built to the price point the lathe was and use fewer Zamac parts. The gears in the ChangeOMatic drive are Zamac, but are not heavily stressed. They rarely wear out, but fail from abuse. They are the same gears used in the Atlas 6" lathe as well as being stock sizes, so they are available.

Designed by Bryan Lund. Used on an Atlas MFC. The base is designed to fit on the full width of the milling machine table. The location of the keyway is noted in the print and the width of the keyway is 3/8" and fits the mill table tslot. Use 3/4" long 5/1618 flat head screws to secure the angle plates to the table using 3/8" tnuts.

While I'm writing, I note that in all of the Atlas Mill parts manuals dating back to 1942, none show the pin that attaches the M1251(*) to the shaft. We need to ID that and get it onto the parts manuals. Was the one you removed from yours solid, tapered groove, or roll? The parts list calls for a 1/8" x 5/8" groove pin on the other end.

Mill spindle is 1"x10 thread, Morse Taper 2. Most tooling for MT2 is tapped 3/8"x16 for the drawbar. There are two round notches in genuine Atlas milling arbors and these mate with pins that protrude from a threadon spindle drive adaptor to keep the arbor from slipping in the taper when driving a milling cutter.

Gary Paine is correct in that the Atlas mill shares several parts with the 6" lathe. If Atlas gears are not available, gears are gears and any stock gears of the same pitch and pressure angle will work although modification of the width and hub might be necessary. They can be shop made or purchased from many sources.

I have an atlas mill that's in a pretty sorry state. I'm taking apart cleaning repainting. Problem is the spindle is totally stuck in the headstock. The spindle spins freely in the bearings, the locking collar unscrewed from the back easily. I've removed set screws from the collar inside the headstock and the gear inside the headstock.
